Writing thesis/dissertation is an essential course component and requirement for every enrolled in postgraduate training and education program. This course will help address the task of writing a thesis/dissertation. It aims to help postgraduate students (i.e. MD, MS, FCPS, MPH, MPhil, MSc etc.) to feel confident in the construction of a good piece of writing and to support students in its successful completion of the course. The focus is on strategies and techniques that can facilitate effective completion of postgraduate studies with minimum constraints.


Learning objectives:

At the end of the course, the participants should be able to:

  • Design and draft a thesis/dissertation.
  • Understand the process of proposing to publishing a thesis/dissertation.
  • Respond to supervisors’ comments.
  • Understand research and publication ethics.

  • What is thesis/ dissertation?
  • Planning and managing thesis/dissertation.
  • Writing thesis/dissertation.
  • Critical reading versus critical writing.
  • Literature review.
  • Data input and analysis.
  • Referencing styles and bibliography.
  • Research and publication ethics
  • Thesis/Dissertation publication
  • Thesis review
  • Comments finalization


Course Duration and Timing:

The course will be conducted for 3 days. Sessions will be conducted from 09:00 AM to 05:00 PM. But at times it may continue beyond this. A substantial amount of reading and preparatory work will be necessary for the course.


Learning Methodology:

The training will be delivered in a stimulating and interactive manner, using a combination of lectures, discussions, group work and computer-based exercises. Handouts and reading materials will be provided.


Training Facilitation:

Experienced icddr,b researcher and professionals from outside who are involved in writing and reviewing thesis/dissertation will facilitate this course.

Target Participants:

Post graduate students of MD, MS, FCPS, MPH, MSc, Master’s students from biological and social science. Those who are in new in research or are at proposal-writing level may also find this course useful and relevant.


Course fee:

The course fee for the Bangladeshi participants is BDT 8,000 (Taka Eight Thousands only) and USD 300 (Three Hundred Dollar) for each international participant to cover the cost of training materials, faculty time,  morning and afternoon tea/coffee, and certificate of participation but does not include accommodation, travel, meal or any other incidental expenses. The preferred method of payment is online using Credit or Debit Card or Mobile Banking (e.g. BKash, DBBL, MCash, MY Cash). However, participants can also make payment directly to Technical Training Unit at icddr,b. Admission will be confirmed only when the fee is received.


Registration and Application:

All interested participants must apply for registration through online.


Selection and confirmation of admission of participants:

Participants will be selected based on their pre-requisite qualifications and first come first served basis. Participants who are currently involved in a thesis/dissertation, enrolled in a postgraduate study, institutional and/or female will get preference.  Only selected participants will be notified by email, SMS or over telephone.



Each participant will be awarded with a certificate only after successful completion of the course.
