International Centre for Diarrheal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b) has been working in collaboration with Bangladesh Primary Care Respiratory Society (BPCRS), the sister concern of International Primary Care Respiratory Group (IPCRG) in Bangladesh, to offer International Asthma Module originally developed by Education for Health, UK. The main goal is to promote asthma and respiratory care through capacity building of the health care professionals including physicians, nurses, medical assistants, pharmacists and others working in rural and urban communities in Bangladesh.This training module is offered in particular for primary care physicians.


Course Structure


The course is 6 months long blended learning educational program which includes face-to-face class room teaching and individualized eLearning Modules. During first 2 days, participants are oriented on e-Learning Management System about how to access and use the eLearning materials. This is followed by practical training and lectures conducted by icddr,b affiliated local or international facilitators. After that, one-day session in every month, preferably in the last Friday, for 5 months including the Spirometry and other practical skills training are conducted. Attendance of these sessions is compulsory.


Course Contents


  • Clinical history taking
  • Carrying out objective lung function tests such as peak flow measurements/ Spirometry
  • Checking inhaler techniques and teaching of appropriate inhalers devices
  • Recommending asthma medications
  • Seeing and treating patients with worsening or acute asthma
  • Discussing asthma action plans
  • Providing asthma education
  • Organizing and running an asthma clinic


Assessment process


During the course, students’ knowledge and skills will be assessed by:

  • Continuous formative assessment
  • Mid Term and Final Term Examinations: Written, Viva, and Hands-on Practicum


Expected outcome


Upon completion of this course, participants are expected to equip themselves with sound knowledge, essential skills and techniques, and demonstrate competent and safe practice in the diagnosis, treatment and management of asthma patients in the field of primary care practice.


Training resources


Registered participants will get access to the comprehensive eLearning resources which will remain valid for 12 months from the date of registration.


Target group


MBBS doctors with completion of internship (preferably engaged in primary care practice) and, have basic knowledge on computer and internet usage.


Course fee


The course fee is Tk. 30,000 (Taka Thirty Thousand only).


How to Pay?


The preferred method of payment is Online using Credit or Debit Card or Mobile Banking (e.g. BKash, DBBL, MCash, MY Cash). However, participants can also make payment directly to Technical Training Unit at icddr,b.


Selection and admission of participants


Participants will be selected based on their pre-requisite qualifications and first come first serve basis. Only selected participants will be notified by email or SMS or over telephone. The admission of the selected participants will be confirmed only when the fee is received.




Successful participants (only those who will successfully complete the International Asthma Module and pass the written and oral examinations) will receive certificate from icddr,b.
