The increasing amount of research information produced each year makes it impossible for users of health research to evaluate and keep up-to-date with the new evidence. The systematic reviews can play a vital role in providing reliable syntheses of research for evidence-based decision-making for users of research evidence. The introductory course is aimed at individuals who have a basic understanding of statistics and epidemiological study designs and wish to take a good grasp of all aspects of systematic review, and willing to pursue subsequent advance courses on systematic reviews.


Learning Outcomes

The training will provide participants with a basis of understanding of the principles, methods and implications of systematic reviews in evidence informed policy and practice.  At the end of the course, the participants will be able to:

  • Understanding the basic principles of  systematic review
  • Understanding the role of systematic reviews in improving healthcare practice
  • Understanding the different approaches to systematic review
  • Role and approaches of search strategy to identify relevant studies for a specific review
  • Understand the process used to collect and extract data
  • Methods of synthesizing and presenting both quantitative and qualitative data
  • General insight into research methodology and contextualization

Learning Methodology

The course will follow a participatory learning approach. It includes lecture discussions, case studies, group work and hands-on practical sessions.

Resource persons are from icddr,b and from outsides who have long experience.


Medium of instruction



Target Participants

Staff members from the scientific track of icddr,b  at GS4 to NOB level who are interested in systematic review and involved in strategic planning; monitoring and evaluation; development and research program.


Course fee

USD 225 (Two Hundred and Twenty Five Dollar) to be supported by SIDA through Research Administration (RA), icddr,b.

Registration and Application

All interested participants must apply for registration through online with Budget Code (27214322) from Research Administration (RA).


Selection and confirmation of admission of participants

Participants will be selected based on first come first serve basis. However, preference will be given to those who are already engaged in writing or planning to write manuscripts. Also, female candidates will get preference as per icddr,b policy. Only the selected participants will be notified by email or SMS or over telephone.


Each participant will be awarded with a certificate only after successful completion of the course.
