The value of publishing the results of a research cannot be overstated. Publications in peer-reviewed journals are vital to disseminate knowledge and further healthcare, particularly in a research organization like icddr,b. The process of writing and having an article published, however, can be challenging, in which most early and mid-level researcher struggles. This is a three-day course designed mainly for early and mid-level icddr,b scientific staff with a view to help them achieving proficiency in writing and publishing scientific papers.  


Learning objectives:

At the end of the course, the participants should be able to:

  • Design and draft a scientific manuscript.
  • Understand the process of publishing an article to a journal.
  • Increase the ability to detail their research findings for dissemination and publication.
  • Respond to reviewers' comments.


Course Contents:

  • Common sections of a manuscript
  • Publishing process including:
    • The structure [e.g. IMRAD etc]
    • Publication ethics
    • The authorship criteria
    • Institutional formalities
    • Targeting the right journals and related submission procedures
  • Writing a cover letter for submission in peer reviewed journal
  • Drafting a manuscript of both quantitative and qualitative research
    • Introduction
    • Methods  
    • Results
    • Discussion
  • Literature search, referencing styles and endnote
  • Response to reviewers' comments
  • Plagiarism, falsifying, paraphrasing and self-referencing


Course Duration and Timing:

The course will be conducted for 3 days. Sessions will be conducted from 09:00 AM to 05:00 PM in first 2 days (3-4 June 2019) and 02:00 PM to 05:00 PM in last day (11 June 2019). But at times it may continue beyond this. A substantial amount of reading and preparatory work will be necessary for the course.


Learning Methodology:

The course will be delivered following a participatory learning approach that includes among others interactive lectures, discussions, case studies, group works and hands-on practical sessions.


Training Facilitation:

Experienced icddr,b staff will facilitate this course.


Medium of instruction:



Target Participants:

icddr,b staff members at GS4 to NOB level from the scientific track  involved in strategic planning, monitoring and evaluation, development and research program.


Course fee:

USD 225 (Two Hundred and Twenty Five Dollar) to be supported by SIDA through Research Administration (RA), icddr,b. The course fee includes tuition fee, training materials, and refreshments including coffee/tea (morning and evening) and certificate of participation.


Registration and Application:

All interested participants must apply for registration through online with Budget Code (27214322) from Research Administration (RA).


Selection and confirmation of admission of participants:

Participants will be selected on the basis of following qualification (in the decreasing order of gravity):

  1. This course is intended for the icddr,b staff of GS4, GS5, GS6, NOA and NOB level.
  2. Participated in a course on research methodology and/or epidemiological research methods.
  3. Currently working on a manuscript (has an unfinished manuscript).
  4. First come first served (female candidates will get preference as per icddr,b policy)

Only the selected participants will be notified by email or SMS or over telephone.



Each participant will be awarded with a certificate only after successful completion of the course.
