Introduction

The prevailing local situation of Dengue in Bangladesh has been announced by WHO as ‘alarming’. However, the discernible morbidity and unfortunate mortality due to Dengue syndrome deemed undesirable because though complex and sometimes unusual in its manifestations, management of Dengue is relatively simple and very effective as long as the intervention is done in a proper and apt manner. A systematic course of action that ensures early detection of the cases, treatment, and referral when necessary will reduce Dengue mortality and the key component of this process is the delivery of optimal clinical services at all levels of healthcare by skilled healthcare personnel to prevent regrettable mortality and to create awareness for appropriate prevention and control.

 

Objectives

  • To understand Dengue syndrome in a comprehensive way.
  • To provide efficient diagnosis and management at all tiers of care, community to hospital.

 

Course contents

  • Epidemiology of Dengue:
    1. Dengue virus.
    2. Case burden.
  • Pathophysiology and clinical manifestation of Dengue infection:
    1. Dengue fever.
    2. Dengue hemorrhagic fever.
    3. Dengue shock syndrome.
    4. Expanded dengue syndrome (unusual manifestations).
    5. Difference between Dengue and Chikungunya fever.
  • Lab investigation for Dengue diagnosis and management:
    1. Lab tests for diagnosis and monitoring.
    2. Time and frequency of investigation.
  • Dengue case management:
    1. Dengue case classification by severity.
    2. Stepwise approach of dengue case management.
    3. Management of complications (shock, hemorrhagic complication, electrolyte imbalance, metabolic acidosis, fluid overload, encephalopathy).
    4. Management in special circumstances (pregnancy, elderly patient, infancy, CLD, CKD, hypertension, DM).
  • Dengue prevention and control.

 

Learning Methodology

The training will be delivered following a participatory learning approach that includes among others interactive lectures, discussions, case studies and group works.

 

Course Duration and Timing

The course will be conducted for 1 day. Sessions will be conducted from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

 

Training Facilitation

Resource persons are from icddr,b and outside icluding Prof. Dr. Md. Titu Miah of dept. of Medicine of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, who have long experience will facilitate this training.

Target Participants

This course is intended for clinicians including intern doctors who take direct care of Dengue patients.

 

Number of participants:

It is intended to accept a maximum of 24 participants per batch.

 

Course fee

BDT 2500.00 to cover the cost of training materials, faculty time, morning and afternoon tea/coffee, lunch and certificate of participation. However, travel costs, medical insurance, other meals and accommodation are not included in the course fee. The course fee is payable on notification of acceptance preferably by wire transfer or bank draft in favor of icddr,b (bank details will be provided with acceptance letter). Admission will be confirmed only when the fee is received.

 

Registration and Application

All interested participants must apply for registration through online.

 

Selection and confirmation of admission of participants

Participants will be selected based on first come first served basis. However, preference will be given to those who are engaged in providing care to Dengue patients in hospital setting. Female candidates will get preference as per icddr,b policy. Only the selected participants will be notified by email or SMS or over telephone.

 

Certification

Each participant will be awarded with a certificate only after successful completion of the course.
